Building credit is important — but so is protecting it. Identity theft happens when someone steals your personal information and opens accounts or takes out loans in your name.
Signs of identity theft:
- You see accounts on your credit report you didn’t open
- You get bills or collection calls for things you never bought
- Your credit score suddenly drops without explanation
Simple ways to protect yourself:
- Check your credit report at least once a year (see above)
- Never share your Social Security number unless necessary
- Use strong, unique passwords and turn on two-factor authentication
- Don’t click suspicious links or attachments in texts or emails
If you’re a victim:
- Visit identitytheft.gov
- Report the fraud
- Freeze your credit with all 3 bureaus (free and reversible)
